Spelling Bee Champ:
Joel Miles #133-We're so proud of you!
Sponsor: Cass County Democrat Missourian, Harrisonville, Missouri
Profile: "Joel (5th grader at Eagle Glen Intermediate, Raymore, Missouri) is an avid reader who enjoys history books as much as he does classic literature, but he also likes sports books and news. He always keeps track of the statistics for his favorite teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the University of Missouri Tigers. When not reading or following sports, Joel focuses on learning how things — mechanical and otherwise — work and thinking through possible future inventions. His interest in mechanics has turned him into a bit of a ferroequinologist — a train enthusiast — but he also spends time simply relaxing and playing various games with his family. Visiting Washington, D.C., is near the top of his list of dream destinations, but he wants his next trip to be to Arizona to see his grandmother and visit the ever-awesome Grand Canyon."

Joel tied for 47th place out of bee’s 281 spellers at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. According to the Cass County Democrat Missourian, "only the top 46 spellers were selected to advance to the semifinals, and Joel’s impressive spelling abilities on stage wasn’t quite enough to make it to the semifinals."
“Somebody set the bar really high in the computer test,” Joel said. “It was close.” (http://www.demo-mo.com/2014/06/06/24889/fifth-grader-ties-for-47th-at.html.)
